Grading Obama's First Week

Next week President Barack Obama continues his push for Congress to pass his $825 billion stimulus package to turn the crummy economy around. He's also ordered the closing of the detention camp at Guantanamo and called for troops out of Iraq in 16 months. What do you think so far? Grade the president's first week. Give him an "A" for a great first week bringing the change he promised during the campaign or an "F" for failing to accomplish anything of substance so far. Use a "B", C" or "D" if you think the outcome is somewhere in between.

I'm wondering what made Governor Chet Culver's office release a statement on not selling the lottery on a Saturday morning...a Saturday statement that took shots at Republicans (they've come after him hard for an idea they think is "short-sighted" and "desperate"). The Gov frequently releases weekend statements praising the achievements of athletes like Kurt Warner or Zach Johnson. But it doesn't happen very often that the Gov weighs in on newsy subject on a Saturday morning.

The statement about the lottery actually is attributed to the Gov's chief of staff, rather than the Gov himself. But here it is:

STATEMENT FROM CHIEF OF STAFF CHARLES KROGMEIER
"The idea that the Iowa Lottery might be leased is getting more attention from pundits and partisans than it deserves. There is no plan to sell or lease the lottery. Period. Governor Culver has made clear that he wants to look at options to lessen the impact of reduced revenues and further budget cuts. But as far the leasing the lottery is concerned, the Governor has held exactly one meeting with a group interested in this issue. This has become nothing more than a silly political game that some in the Republican Party want to play, and at a time when Iowans want a balanced budget and deserve bipartisan results. This much is certain: when the Governor releases his budget proposal in a few days, it will not include a line item reflecting a lease of the lottery."

F - Stimulus package full of pork!
F- Gitmo - really giving rights to terrorists is a priority?
F- alienating conservatives with the Rush Limbaugh comment yesterday.

I'd say a C so far. I didn't expect too much the first week. But this country needs him to get things done.

I would give him a "D". He is bent on following through with his campaign rhetoric without thinking of the consequences now that he is President. For instance, those released from Gitmo have now joined our enemies! Whose son or daughter will die at their hand? Stop and think it out before you leap, President Obama.

I think he DESERVES an F. Have him meet with Soldiers who have put their lives on the line to protect this great country. Have him meet face to face the widows, children left behind after 9-11.

F - I fear for the national security of our country. He is not thinking about the long-term consequences.

I would give him an incomplete as it's hard to know what he has truly done with such an openly biased mainstream media.

I would give him an "a". Never has a President had so much pressure to change the course of the economy so quickly with the media on his heels every minute. FDR had a huge issue with the depression but did not have the media to deal with and had a record 4 terms to do it. I hope people realize it took years to create the economic downfall we are in, and it will take a lot more than the "100" days or even 1 term to fix it.

He wont get a second term, and what pressure has or will the media put on him. They are so biased it isnt even funny. If he does something that hurts the country the media will cover it up and make it seem like GW was at fault...

This is a joke. He hasn't done a thing and when he did sign an executive order with Gitmo, he barely understood what was being done and had to quote his aid almost word for word. I thought HE HAD a plan. Sounds like he doesn't have a clue.

His "stimulus" package is so full of pork and my grand kids will be paying for things that should be allowed to 'play out naturally' without our gov't getting involved. He needs to do what Bush didn't...stay out of financing foolish people's problems.

I'd give him a D.

I'd say an F.

F- Stimulus package - since when have we ever in our history gotten out of a recession by increasing spending?

F - Gitmo, he is really, really looking like a rookie here. Does he know what he is doing.

F - Overturning Mexico City Policy - I'm disgusted that I have to fund abortions with my taxes.

F - His choice for Press Secretary and Secretary of the Treasury (I mean do we want somebody who doesn't even know how to pay his own taxes to lead the U.S. Treasury Department?)

B - I, for one, am impressed by what he has accomplished so far. I believe President Obama hit the groud running and hasn't stopped yet. He is planning on going to Capitol Hill himself whereas former Pres. Bush usually sent his aids instead. While his going there my not always be possible due to a conflict in his schedule, I firmly believe it is a sign he will do all he promised for us and more in the next 4 years. The haters need to give him a chance as he has only been in office for 6 days. He was working his first weekend to try to get as much done in as short as time as possible for US.

I am giving him an "F".He has no clue at all. He seems hell bent on undoing everything the republicans have done without thinking of the problems at hand now or the consequences of his actions. I stand by my first impression of him and it was not to trust him. I fear for our country.

F across the board!
He's a Politician from Illinois, I rest my case!

I say I for Incomplete. Give the man a chance.

A - if you believe in large government and out of control spending.

F - if you believe our Founding Fathers were for limited government.

No rational person would grade a president after only a week in office. The only people who would are those who are determined to love him no matter what, or to hate him no matter what. No person with a brain could give him anything but an 'incomplete' so far.

Do you ever report things that are against the Democrat Party and disrespectful, especially to Veteran's of the United States? How about President Obama blowing off the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients? Being a Veteran I am appalled that someone in his position would do something like that. Whether he cares what has been sacrificed by those who serve or not, he should still give them a few minutes of his time. This just goes to show what we can probably expect in the future. I know you will probably just delete this and not give it a second look, but it is very sad that we as a society don't discuss all of the current events. Just the ones that the upper management would like to discuss. This is beyond parties, it is about respecting the American Veteran and the American People!

lied to agai. i see his stimulis package has forgotten that he promise seniors no taxes up to 50000. he is a bald faced liar

To the previous two bloggers: Randy hit it right on the nose, and to the last, just wait to see how many more lies there will be to come!

Man....sure are a lot of poor sorry crybaby republicans on here. If you don't like the pork on the stimulus bill...tell the republican senators to quit pushing it.

Gitmo? Right to fair trial is what the founding fathers promised...and by the way..the FEW that were released and SUPPOSEDLY have joined our enemies, although there's no real proof of that...were released by Bush.

It's hard to grade when he's just barely climbed down in the sewer where Bush left us.....give him time to work his way out. As far as a grade for effort...I'd give him a B. But it'd be an A++++++ if we were still grading on Bush's curve.

Iagree right to afair trial but this does not apply to war criminals. besides B>O had already opossed the constituion. before he took the oath .chances are alot of these complaints are from some who have never served.

I say an F, Stimulus package will not help Joe the Plumber or us, just deeper in the financial hole for America, with no Hope, and a lot of bad change (TAXES). Betty from Knoxville
