A Kernel of Hope?

Yes, I know. It wasn't scientific. But "Cast Your Kernel 2006, Part I and Part II seemed to show some strength for Ed Fallon. More than 800 people dropped a piece of corn into the jar of a Gub wannabe. Fallon topped the dems the first day at the downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market. Culver bested Fallon in a much smaller sample we took at Gray's Lake in Des Moines on Memorial Day.
Quite a few people said it's Fallon's simple but positive tv ads he's running. That's why they say they'll vote for him. They complained (polite way to say the b#!*^ word) that Blouin and Culver have gone way too far with all their negative ads. Of course, any poli sci-type will say negative ads work, and that's why candidates have used them for decades.

Fallon says he's attracting a lot of non-dems to switch over to him for the primary. Questions are though...Are there enough of them to help him win? Did these repubs and independents get registered in time over the weekend so that they're even eligible to vote on primary day? And will they show up?

Duh-bate

Buh-bye to the debates...The dems (no invite for Sal www.salmohamedforgovernor.org) have wrapped up their final debate before the primary. Apparently, Culver's pulled out of the KUNI debate next week. I wonder why...
The Blouin camp may go 1 for 2 by night's end. Staffers said Culver's a flip-flopper on his love for civil unions and for a way to get Newton back some jobs and help the corn biz, too.
Blouin's staff maintains Culver told a gay rights group he's for civil unions in Iowa a few months back (I think Connecticut and Vermont are the only state's with this protection for same-sex couples so far) . During the IPTV/Des Moines Register debate Saturday, Culver said he's against civil unions (this came out during the lightning round questioning of the candidates. It's so enjoyable to see these guys only be able to give a yes or no answer. Or at least those were the rules) I can't seem to find anyone who can offer any proof Culver actually said what Blouin's peeps said he said months ago.
The Blouin gang may have caught the Chetster on another matter though. During Culver's news conference at Hoover High in Des Moines November 3rd, he talked about building a plant in Newton (where the soon-to-be-gone Maytag/Whirlpool plant stands) to make flex fuel vehicles. Blouin said that's unlikely in this state. Too much for a small state to steal a company from someplace else. Costs way too much. Culver then said he just meant building part of the flex fuelers, not the whole vehicle. Blouin's people say, make up your mind.
Culver tried to nail Blouin on flopping on abortion. He wanted to know why Blouin pushed to ban abortion when he was a congressman in the 70s and now he's saying he'll leave the law alone if he becomes guv. Too bad it took Culver so long to try to ask and re-ask the questions, he left no time for Blouin to have to answer. The moderator made them move on to the next topic. Oops... At least he'll get another shot during that KUNI debate....oops.
Fallon, who usually plays the nice guy, brought a little heat, too. He wondered why Culver spent so much of his out-of-state donated money on so many out-of-state consultants and such. Would Culver do the same with other things in the state, he asks? Ethanol plants? Power plants?
Random thoughts...
Why did Blouin keep taking his glasses off, then putting them back on over and over? Trying to look younger? Then older? Then younger? Then older?
Why was Culver sweating so much?
How did Blouin get out so many press releases while the debate was still going on?
Why can't former Des Moines Rep. John Connors serve as referee during these things (He was a stud boxer in his day and kick still kick a little a-- at the age of 80 plus. His wife still looks great, too, btw)
Why did I eat lunch before the debate at Burger King when the Register was so kind to put out sandwiches for us to snack on during the Gub-fest?

And it starts...

We can call it an official race now. Someone has gone negative. Mike Blouin is the winner (or loser, depending on your take on it) Blouin's airing a new tv ad. He comes after Chet Culver for a lobbying job he had. Culver worked for Ed Campbell who represented IBP. Blouin's saying Culver's a hypocrite for criticizing the big meatpacking plant now, but lobbying for the place in the '90s.

Culver says he was a kid out of college back then, and besides, he says he never actually lobbied on IBP's behalf. Here's the Culver rebuttal...

"Mike Blouin has chosen to take the low road in this primary by being first to air negative and misleading attack ads on television. Blouin is making a misleading smear and he knows it. When I was 23 years old, just out of college, I worked for a firm headed by former Iowa Democratic Party chair Ed Campbell that represented a number of clients, including Iowa Beef Processors. My role at the firm was administrative, but as a requirement of my employment, I had to fill out registration forms that identified me as a lobbyist. Let me be very clear: I never lobbied on behalf of Iowa Beef."

Blouin's spokesperson says he's just pointing out the truth. And if Culver's using the excuse that he was just a kid out of college, then how can Culver brag about working in the A.G.'s office the following year or so? Wasn't he still just a kid?

Let the mudslinging begin...

Dave

A Little Secret Support?

Mike Blouin hit the airwaves with another commercial. He says Gov Vilsack's name 27 times. O.K., maybe not quite. He doesn't show that grinny picture with the Gov he used in the last spot. But he mentions several times about working with the Gov in the past on bringing jobs here (Of course, Ed Fallon would argue that most of those 25,000 promised jobs aren't here yet and may never come).
Those whispers at the statehouse that the Gov's pushing behind-the-scenes for Blouin to win probably don't hurt. The Gov told me he won't endorse before the primary. Will his wife do a pre-primary endorsement like she did for John Kerry pre-caucus in '04? Insiders seem to argue this both ways. Here's one argument...It could be risky if she does (which will make some people think her hubby is, too) if Blouin loses. That could be akward from June til November. But is it risky the other way, too? That's the other argument...What if neither of the Vilsacks endorses Blouin, Blouin loses the primary and Culver then loses the general election? Won't that hurt the Gov's prez chances if he couldn't get a dem elected to replace him? Stay tuned...

Can't they all just get along?

An observation...Mike Blouin and Chet Culver don't like each other much. Am I going too far here? The two went back and forth too many times to count during the democratic gubernatorial debate in West Des Moines sponsored by the Iowa Broadcast News Association Saturday. (BTW, is it ironic that there were microphone problems during a convention of broadcasters?) Blouin went after Culver for lobbying for IBP after graduating college. Culver called him "desperate." Blouin even criticized Culver for yacking too long after his designated time ran out again and again. (Culver did go long almost every question).
Ed Fallon did his best to stand out. He reminded everyone he hates the 2000 foot rule for sex offenders. He voted against it actually. His clothes helped stand out a bit, too. He went with green attire. Culver and Blouin stuck to the typical politician look...blue suit, red power tie.
Interesting question during the debate...which political leader do the candidates most admire?Blouin went with a pair of initials...JFK, RFK.
Culver choose the Roosevelts, not Teddy and Franklin. He chose Franklin & Eleanor.
Fallon listed more political VIP's than the average person on the street can even name....FDR, Henry Wallace, Tom Harkin, Paul Wellstone, Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Gandhi. Did I leave anyone out?
Oh, yeah, Sal Mohamed chose Henry Wallace, too.
