Debate over Debates

Leonard Boswell's campaign says he's too busy to debate, with the Farm Bill and all. Ed Fallon's not buying it. He thinks, surely, Boswell can find one day somewhere to debate him. After all, Fallon says the candidates have received at least 10 requests to go head-to-head.

Boswell did debate Republican Jeff Lamberti back in 2006. He didn't debate Republican Stan Thompson in 2002.

District 3 voters deserve to hear from Boswell and Fallon on the issues. Boswell is in recess and should make time for the debate. Boswell owes his constituents more than just glossy, misleading mailers.

One debate...seriously??? Just one stinking debate. Is that really that difficult? No wonder challengers can't beat incumbents. The system is rigged!

Boswell is a terrible speaker. All he ever talks about is how he was a vet. I wish he would discuss something topical for once. Instead he is avoiding it. Obviously his campaign staff is nervous about the potential for embarrassment that a debate brings. I saw both Boswell and Fallon speak at Valley High School for the district convention 9 days ago and Fallon was clearly much more prepared to talk about the issues. Boswell is blowing off 10 prominent news mediums and organizations to avoid Fallon--that is inexcusable.

Boswell made time for plenty of fundraisers lately and was seen in the Drake Relays parade--why can't he make time for a debate?

I guess when you've been a fat cat in Washington DC for 12 years you are above the democratic process (debates)!
I heard Boswell speak at the 3rd District convention--he was awful! All he could do was name drop and ramble on about what good things he is doing--if you are doing such good things, Boswell--why won't you debate and let us know about them?!

I am truly disgusted this man is in Congress and making decisions for the country!
Go Ed Fallon--we could use articulate, intelligent leadership in Congress!

Boswell was at the Drake Relays parade--but he can't make time for a debate?!

OLD Leonard only pushed through 3 pieces of legislation in 12 years of service--and one of those bills was to rename a building!! Add that to an abysmal voting record and no wonder Grandpa Boswell is refusing a debate!

Ed Fallon rocks! And he is for Obama! Fallon reflects District 3 much more than Boswell does. Time to retire.

Boswell is not debating because the man cannot speak well! At the district convention he rambled on about Gephart and Pelosi--but mentioned nothing about any issues. Fallon specifically referenced the Democratic platform.
Retire Boswell--let a real Democrat represent our district in Congress!!!

I saw Fallon at the Obama rally too--he had a huge group of supporters with him. I talked to a young staffer that was there and he really knew his stuff. If Fallon's staff is that prepared to discuss the issues, then I can only imagine that Fallon would blow Boswell out of the water. Boswell is doing the smart thing politically by not giving voters the chance to compare these two candidates.

Fallon is the true Democrat in this race. Boswell has continually voted with Bush and against the majority Democratic party--it is time for a change in Washington--vote for Ed Fallon!!

Hey moveonboswell--the other piece of legislation that Boswell put through besides renaming that building was to get Windsor Heights a zipcode. He is wasting our time and money. You would think a senior congressman would have accomplished more. It would be irresponsible of district 3 to reelect Boswell.

I go to Drake and saw a Boswell flier offering to pay volunteers--SERIOUSLY? Quite the oxymoron. If people were really passionate about getting this old guy re-elected he wouldn't have to pay anyone.

Anonymous said...

drakelaw--Boswell can pay volunteers because 74% of his money comes from PACs and lobbyists with 96% of that money coming from out of state. If we really want to make a difference and support a new Democratic president then we need serious campaign finance reform. Ed Fallon is committed to that and when you deduct Boswell's PAC and lobbyist money from his total funds for the first filing period you will see that Fallon raised nearly $30k more than Boswell. Iowans are putting their money where their votes are.

Boswell was at a Jewish event in Des Moines this weekend--apparently he can make time to schooze it up with AIPAC supporters (of which he takes their PAC money!) but not engage in the democratic process!
Admit it Boswell---you're a tool!Retire and give a true Democrat who isn't bought by big money the chance to serve the 3rd District!

showing up in parades and sending out mailers with your franking privileges is not true leadership. we are tired of politicians more worried about appearances than progress. Fallon is out in the community and discussing the issues--at least voters have the opportunity to learn where he stands.

I used to vote for Boswell when I had no other Democrat as a choice. It will be a breath of fresh air to vote for Fallon on June 3rd.

why can't Boswell just retire and enjoy his 3 pensions?

Did you all see the letters to the editor in the Des Moines Register at the end of last week? I think the folks at the Register are pretty annoyed that Boswell turned down their debate--it was all very positive press for Fallon.

Boswell's staff tried to bury this news by giving their decision to not debate on a Friday afternoon. Thank you WHOtv for calling this to the voters' attention. We should all write in or call Boswell's office and demand a debate.

Fallon served my area in the state legislature for 14 years and did a wonderful job. I think he is ready for this new challenge. From the comments I'm reading here and on the Register blogs, it seems there are a lot of engaged voters who agree with me.

Wow--I didn't think it would be possible to bean an incumbent in Iowa.

I'm pleasantly surprised by these comments.

I am proud to vote for Boswell he has Iowa values and thoughts. and is needed more in Washington than debating.

I am disappointed that Boswell has made so much time for fund raisers but can't spare even an hour for a debate. It a breath of fresh air to be able to vote for a true Democrat, instead of someone that just calls themselves a Democrat. Fallon '08

Boswell is not needed in Washington--he is in recess! Refusing to debate is simply ignoring the voters who want a fact-based discussion on the issues.

how embarrassing.

Call Leonard Boswell at (515)282-1909 and ask him to debate Ed Fallon. He is accountable to us!!

Anonymous said...

boswell is afraid he will get voted out and lose all of the free money that the congressmen get. what happened to him promise to serve only 2 terms? i have a good idea why he is still in office, $$$$. same as harkin and grassley. they are all a bunch of crooks.

Congressman Boswell needs to give an account for his Bush-friendly votes. His determination not to debate Fallon looks very much like someone who's trying to hide.

Fallon at an Obama Rally- HA HA HAH HAH HAH!! Liar!!! Fallon was the Edwards Chair he then turned that campaign into the Fallon for Congress camp. Fallon is out of touch both the Vilsack and Culver camps HATE him ! True Democrat!! What!!! This is the guy that pushed Nader down our throats causing us to lose to the Bushies. We could of had John Kerry as our president by now if it were not for Fallon. WTF is wrong with you people. Obama, yeah he is liberal but he is fuckin joke!

Anonymous said...

Wow, that's a really sad comment. I was a precinct captain for Edwards and now I support Obama. I know a staffer with Culver and he is going to vote for Fallon. Also, in case you didn't know, Gore won Iowa, therefore none of Iowa's electoral college delegates went to Bush, therefore Fallon didn't help Bush win. Fallon has also stated that his support of Nader was a mistake.

Boswell has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from corporate PACs, voted for the Iraq war, and supported amnesty for telecom companies that submitted the citizens of our nation to wiretaps without warrants.

Sir, I believe that you are the joke.
